Artist Statement: Amber Mills

As an artist mainly focused in pottery, it is an enjoyable challenge to create unique works of  art that are not only reflective of the long history of art, but work that also stands alone, fresh and new in their own right.

I am inspired and excited by nature, the living art, and the way that all nature grows through a series of tessellating cells that continuously emerge through the beauty of Pi. I am also inspired by the way countless cultures have similarly used nature as a source of inspiration.  Moorish, Turkish and Egyptian architectural ornamentation each excite my senses as do the art movements they helped to inspire: art nouveau and art deco. These cultures and art movements have played significant inspirational roles in my art work.  They made my mind race with wonder and excitement as I searched for their hidden secrets, reasons and meanings. Consequently, I began to find insight and enjoyment through designing and applying my own tessellation patterns to the surface of my utilitarian wares.

Through the development and application of my own designs and patterns I have tried to infuse my pottery with the excitement and wonder that I feel. Through this process, I am discovering for myself the archetypal human condition that calls us to seek for and attempt to perpetuate deep meaning in our lives. Human beings have always tried to infuse tangible things with deep meaning by highlighting them with decoration and ornamentation. These items then stand as reminders of the sacred, the mystery, the deep meaning with which we have imbued them. This ideal drives my work. It is my goal to give members of my audience the opportunity to create their own unique and lasting relationship with my pottery as they use and enjoy it.

My colour pallet is chiefly influenced by the desired chemical reactions that occur during my glaze firing.  These reactions create a very unique appearance to my work.  I focus on creating a background with a subtle, soft effect so that the rich tessellations and bright dots can dominate with texture and vibrancy.

About Amber: Foreword by her Dad

Amber is my third child. She has twin brothers, older by 7 years. I wouldn't have known what raising a child was all about if it wasn't for Amber. Her brothers each have a built-in best friend; Amber was a bit more demanding from day one.

The best story to demonstrate Amber's pre-destined life as an artist happened when she was around 4 years old. The kids were trashing the house with their toys. Dad, (me), decided to have a family meeting over this issue and I very demandingly wanted the kids to take resposibility for putting their toys away.

The meeting wasn't going well. I wasn't getting any buy-in from the boys. Then Amber spoke up. "I know what my job is," she said. "It's cut and paste". The meeting ended in laughter.

I'm proud to be her Dad.
